Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew predicts 'special week' against Benfica ... - Telegraph.co.uk

"Our defensive record is very good in Europe. We have done enough in the first leg to say we have got a big shout if we are intelligent about how we approach it.

"It's all about the fans. I think, for us, if we need two goals with 20 minutes to go we can do it. The fans have seen the way we are finishing games and they will know we can."

Should they succeed, this Newcastle side will progress to the semi-finals of this competition for only the second time in the club's history and move another step closer to ending a 44-year wait for a major trophy.

Pardew, though, has not been helped by injuries. The spine of the team has been weakened by the loss of Fabricio Coloccini and Cheick Tioté to injury, but the return of Hatem Ben Arfa to training this week means they will have a potential match-winner on the bench.

Benfica are a classy side, but their arrogance was evident before the first leg in terms of their media coverage and could be their downfall on Tyneside.
