German giant Mertesacker has emerged as the Gunners' first choice centre-half, and manager Wenger feels the 28-year-old can play with either Laurent Koscielny and Thomas Vermaelen.
While that pair can struggle when used in tandem, Mertesacker makes both of them look good - even if his own 6ft 7in frame can appear deeply awkward.
Ahead of Saturday's trip to Fulham, Wenger said: "He combines well with both Vermaelen and Koscielny. They are good partnerships. He is a bit more 'positional play'.
Wenger also defended striker Olivier Giroud, despite his midweek misses which cost Champions League-chasing Arsenal two valuable points against Everton.
Giroud has scored 17 goals in all competitions in his debut season of English football, but the Frenchman is still struggling to win over the doubters.
Wenger added: "He gave a lot until now and for his first season he is doing extremely well because he has a fantastic attitude, a positive mind.
"He gives us another dimension with the physical challenges in the air. He has scored 17 goals in all competitions, 11 in the league - for a first season that is quite good.
"He has good physical potential, Olivier. He wants to play every single game, he has a good basic stamina and he can absorb the games.
"He can absorb the body to body contact, because he's a strong guy. I think you will see more from him next season, and there's a lot more to come from him.
"He is very extrovert and has a positive nature. He wants to do well - he is desperate to do well - and is not the one who hides after.
Fulham manager Jol and Arsenal counterpart Wenger have not always seen eye-to-eye – stemming back to the former's days with the Gunners' arch-rivals Tottenham.
Fulham are looking to bounce back from Wednesday's 3-0 defeat to Chelsea, which saw the Blues leapfrog Arsenal to go third in the table as the clubs' three-way scrap with Spurs for battle for Champions League qualification continues.
Jol will have midfielder Steve Sidwell available for selection after he served a three-game ban for his sending-off against Queens Park Rangers.
The Dutchman has also spoken to Sidwell about extending his stay at the Cottagers beyond 2014, when his current deal expires.
"After Mousa Dembele left [for Spurs last summer], I needed him [Sidwell]. He was probably the only player I had from the season before.
"He's a character and wants to train extra for the next game. He has prepared for the game and there is no hesitation or doubt that he will be the same as he was before."
