Roberto Mancini will need to have had another year from Manchester City, says previous... - Telegraph. co. uk.

City finally put an end to three days of excessive speculation over Mancini's spot by announcing his journeying late on Monday evening hours.

The club said the Italian had failed to achieve this season's "stated targets" while there was clearly also a desire to formulate a "holistic approach to every one aspects of football" for City.

But after receiving the Premier League last year and the FA Mug in 2011, despite Western european disappointments, Hinchcliffe feels Mancini deserved more time.

Hinchcliffe told Sky Physical activities News: "I am not surprised, there have been a lot of rumours that Roberto are going to be leaving the club.

"But I really do think he has recently been treated rather harshly, it's a difficult season, on the internet reasons why City haven't done as well in the Premier Group. Losing to Wigan inside FA Cup final was maybe the final straw.

"I am frustrated, I felt they should have given him at minimum another 12 months, another Champions League campaign to help you prove his worth.

"You thought they realised it's not going to be success year following year - you do ought to put things in place, lay the foundations.

"Getting Mancini on this phone with a long-term contract seemed the suitable move but things possess drastically changed. "

The mention of the 'holistic approach' in the statement in which Location announced Mancini's departure is interpreted by some people being reference to other areas of his management style.

Mancini certainly attracted criticism for many comments about certain game enthusiasts, which may not get helped dressing room relaxation. Hinchcliffe feels it may not just be failings over the field with have value Mancini.

Malaga coach Manuel Pellegrini, exactly who reputedly has excellent man-management abilities, is the overwhelming favourite to ensure Mancini.

Hinchcliffe said: "All this take a look at a holistic approach -- do they think Pellegrini will get the best straight from the club and players, some thing more than Mancini made.

"Was there a fractured connection with some players? Pellegrini may be able to put which right and Manchester City could improve more quickly with a good manager that understands game enthusiasts better. "

That talked about, Hinchcliffe feels two successive failures with the Champions League may are generally the ultimate factor.

"Maybe that will be the overriding factor, the another thing they were not completely sure about. Maybe they feel they can have a better risk under Pellegrini. "

Chip Saban's Non-Committable Offers Express How Alabama Doesn't Sponsor, It Drafts.

By means of three straight 247Sports. com amalgamated recruiting titles under this belt, Alabama head coach Nick Saban has generated himself as not solely the best coach in the country, but also the nation's unquestioned king of prospecting.

Consistent with Mike Herndon of AL. com, Saban told fans on a Crimson Caravan event in Orange Beach, Ala., that all of Alabama's offers to quarterbacks inside the class of 2014 are generally non-committable until Saban sees them figure out personally at Alabama's campy.

It is our idea at certain positions that we really like to learn a great deal about players and the most effective ways to learn in regards to player is when people come and visit people, because you're limited in the case of the contact you may have some with them off-campus. To get a variety of them to come here with the summer I think is a really big tool in evaluation together with an opportunity to know guys, to see if they have the right character and attitude to slip in your program.

Positive, the words "non-committable" and "offer" contradict the other, but semantics aren't exactly important inside recruiting game. After just about all, a commitment isn't a consignment until national signing daytime.

As Michael Carvell in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution points out and about, non-committable offers aren't uncommon—especially for quarterback. In fact, it is actually good business.

Two players mentioned in the AJC that have non-committable gives from Alabama are 247Sports. com 4-star Clemson dedicate Deshaun Watson—the fourth-best pro-style quarterback with the composite index, and 4-star pro-style potential Tyler Harris from Blackshear, Ga.

These aren't exactly no-name prospects that happen to be destined to be underground on college depth graphs. These are two studs who already have offers from several schools and will receive plenty more around now and signing daytime.

Former Tennessee head private coach Derek Dooley said that best before his group hosted the Crimson Tide in 2012 (via: AL. com):

Starting quarterback AJ McCarron could exhaust his eligibility as soon as 2013 season, leaving Alec Morris, Blake Sims and Cooper Bateman as the primary competitors for the quarterback spot in 2014. That's lots of competition for any inbound freshman, but McCarron's departure certainly makes Alabama a little more attractive to any quarterback in the upcoming recruiting class.

Since Saban insists concerning evaluating quarterbacks on campus just before truly issuing a grant offer, it's as much some matter of selecting the quarterback since it is recruiting.

Alabama's signing up efforts, success on the field and capability to send players to that NFL through the draft—22 over the last three seasons—have created the right recruiting scenario.

While non-committable offers are, not every school can usually get away with them. Whether a prospect is serious about championships, draft status and playing time, Alabama will offer it up in 2014.

Tiger Woods is Killing Nike Golf

In the history of Nike Golf there was Duval (and now Duval again), and Glover, and Cink, and now Rory, and Stanley, and Watney too, but before there were any of them, there was Tiger Woods.

Tiger Woods isn't simply synonymous with Nike Golf, Tiger Woods is Nike Golf. He put them on the map, and while it has taken some time, Tiger is the reason why most view Nike as a legitimate player on the golf equipment scene.

2013 should be a banner year for Nike. Most of the world has moved on from the scandal, Josyln James, and whatever mostly nameless Perkins waitress you want to throw in the mix. The Sergio mess aside, Tiger is healthy, he seems happy (as happy as Tiger ever seems), and most importantly for Nike, he's not only winning again, one could make a legitimate argument that he's playing the best golf of his life.

In any other sport this kind of success would be a slam dunk for the company in Nike's position, but this isn't any other sport, it's golf, and while I'm hard-pressed to explain exactly how it's different, I'm certain that it is.

If Nike is serious about becoming the #1 Company in Golf, and they've told me as much on a few occasions now, they need to realize they've outgrown Tiger Woods. He's not only taken them as far as any one man could have, the company's apparent continued reliance on him to take them even further is killing Nike Golf.

I'm not suggesting they dump him. He's absolutely a key piece to any future success, but you can't build the #1 Company in Golf around a single athlete, not even when that athlete is Tiger Woods. To get to #1 Nike needs more than Tiger Woods. They need more than Rory McIlroy too. A whole lot more.

Maybe I'm wrong, but as a guy on the outside with a little bit of inside knowledge, it sure looks like the engine powering Nike Golf's breakout season has stalled.

To get things moving in the right direction again, I respectfully (as respectfully as I'm capable of anyway) submit this list of 5 Things Nike Golf needs to do if they're serious about being #1:

I know…easier said than done. It's Tiger, he's the best in the world, and he's not going to play anything he doesn't want too, but Tiger's gear is a big problem for Nike.

Tiger isn't just good, Tiger is too good. Nike is always going to have to fight the perception that Tiger could win with absolutely anything in his bag.

Most knowledgeable consumers already believe that Tiger would still win if you forced him to play with 3 croquet mallets, a hockey stick, and a tennis ball (USGA Rules not withstanding), but it still doesn't look good for Nike when Tiger is winning at a better than 50% clip with a 2 year old driver and a golf ball that's been off the shelf for just as long.

Every Tiger win is a missed opportunity to promote the new gear. Worse yet, it's actually bad for business. If the new stuff isn't good enough for Tiger, why the hell should the average golfer put it in his bag?

The Covert should have been the biggest driver story of the year, but it's not. That's in no small part due to Tiger's continued use of what for the rest of us is supposed to be obsolete technology.

Like I said…I get it. Equipment changes for guys at Tiger's level are kind of a big deal, and Tiger is notoriously precise. It takes time, effort, and a whole lot of trial and error (which is why the USGA's Conforming Driver list is about 6 versions of the Covert deep at this point), but I gotta be honest with you, it doesn't look good when red is on the shelves and black is in Tiger's bag.

When Tiger wins the US Open, and I'm pretty sure he will, if he does it without the signature red club in the bag (sorry, a fairway wood barely counts), you can close the book on the Covert. Whatever story Nike had left to tell… forget about it. It's over. The same is true for RZN 2.0. You might as well bring back the Tour D.

The smart play is to take a page out of TaylorMade's book on this one. When they release a new driver, the biggest names on their staff play it. Immediately. The brand is bigger than the athlete, and it should be.

Granted, TaylorMade doesn't have a Tiger Woods on the roster, but they do have a lot of other guys. And those others guys…within a month of release, they made the R1 the #1 Driver on Tour, which is a big part of the reason the R1, even with a $400 price tag, and a questionable paint job, is one of the best selling drivers on the market right now.

Nike needs more tour spread. Yeah, it's stupid how much value the average consumer places on what the tour guys have in their bags, but that's how it goes. It's Pyramid of Influence 101.

Nike knows this. It's why they pay Tiger, Rory, and Schwartzel, Watney, and those other guys (and women) stupid amounts of money to wear the swoosh. To be a serious player at retail, you gotta have guys on tour.

The problem for Nike is that their top guy only plays 1/3 of the time and the #2 guy plays only slightly more often. If you can force Tiger and Rory to play twice as often – and even if you can –  you're going to need a lot more guys. A lot more than the handful you added this season.

Golf isn't like the other sports where having the most popular guy in the game all but guarantees you'll outsell the competition.

We all know who the more successful (and the more popular) golfer is, but who's #1 in drivers? Who's #1 in irons. Who's the #1 company in golf right now?

TaylorMade is #1, not because they have the best player…or the two best players. They don't win the most majors.  They're #1 because they have more guys playing their gear. More guys means more sales. It's a numbers game, and  a pretty easy one at that.

Let me drop some circular logic on you. You know why Titleist is the #1 Ball in Golf? It's not because any single golfer plays the Pro V1, it's because just about everyone who isn't (and some who are) on staff with TaylorMade, Nike, Callaway or Cleveland has the Pro V1 in their bag. Titleist has the #1 Ball in Golf because Titleist has the #1 Ball in Golf. The numbers are self-perpetuating.

Nike sucks at social media. Sorry, there's no point in tap dancing around it. It's easy to look at the raw numbers (Nike has the largest social media following in all of golf) and interpret the count as a measure of success. It's not. It speaks to the popularity of the Nike brand, and the popularity of Tiger Woods, but please believe me when I tell you you're doing it wrong.

Social Media presents the most direct opportunity for a company to have a real conversation with potential customers and fans, and given their reach, Nike Golf has the biggest opportunity in all of golf. And thus far, Nike Golf has completely squandered it.

Tiger's every tweeted word…hell every syllable is clearly scripted, scrutinized, and sanitized. There's barely an ounce of actual genuine humanity in the entire feed. It's not @TigerWoods it's @TigerWoodsPRMachine. It's disingenuous and it's painfully obvious. That's fine…for Tiger.

While I am unbiased in my assessment of the industry, on a human level, I'm anything but. The people I know at Nike from President Cindy Davis to the R&D  guys to the PR team are some of my favorites. They're brilliant, they're insightful. They're good people, and most importantly, they're genuine. They have personality, and that's where the tremendous disconnect is.

Nike's Tweets and Facebook posts are a formulaic mix of What Would You Do photos, tour news, product shots, mad libs (Nike Golf _____ at Social Media), and what can best be described as motivational posters (Just Do It). Actual interaction is tossed aside in favor of a steady stream of one-way conversations. We talk, then you talk, but we don't converse. There's no back-and-forth. It's not compelling, it's not fun, and there's no real engagement. At least the pictures are cool.

This time last year, Callaway was pretty horrible at Social Media too (they sucked), but they've transformed themselves – almost overnight. The new Callaway has been aggressive, but very genuine in its approach to Social media. They've got people at all levels of the company actively involved and interacting with the consumer. Most importantly they've embraced their humanity.  You know there's a real person on the other end of the wire.

Callaway's Social Media success is a large part of the reason why thee company turnaround is happening faster than anyone could have imagined.

Nike's Social Media approach isn't simply bland, it's robotic. It's the voice that asks you to speak or input your credit card account number using your touch-tone phone.

It's great that you believe in the athlete, and it does make for one hell of a tagline. It looks great in those motivational-style graphics that keep popping up on Twitter and Facebook.

That kind of approach has clearly worked well in football, and metric football (soccer), basketball and running. I'm fairly certain it'd be a hit in hockey too, but this is golf, and like I said at the beginning, golf is different.

Athletes don't play golf…well some do, but the point is golf is not the exclusive domain of athletes. Golf is one of the few sports that allows non-athletes to play…and even play competitively at some level into our 80s. Hell, I've got a 90 something year-old at my club who still manages to hit balls on the range. They don't go very far, but the old man is swinging.

He's awesome, but he's not an athlete, and majority of us who play golf, we're not athletes either…at least not anymore.

You want to kill it in golf? You really want to be #1? To hell with the athlete, believe in the 40 year old fat guy. Believe in him, and all the other non-athletes and former athletes who live and breathe the game of golf every day.

Recreational golfers are only partly delusional. We're willing to believe that your driver will give us 10 more yards, and your irons will make us better ballstrikers. We're all but certain that new gear and new gear alone will absolutely lower our scores, but when pressed, most of us aren't diluted enough that we actually think of ourselves as athletes.

The problem with believing in the athlete is that it conveys the message that Nike Golf's gear has nothing to do with success on the golf course. It's the athlete not the equipment.

And you're right, it is the athlete…or at the very least, it's the golfer, but that doesn't mean you print it. To get to the top, you absolutely need us to believe it's the gear.

You can still believe in the athlete, but if  the 40 year old fat guy doesn't believe your gear will make him better, 100 red clubs (or just 14) in Tiger's bag won't get him to buy a single one of them.

That's right…diversify. Everything I've said so far has led to this. Rely less on Tiger Woods. Keep him in the family, but pick your spots. As absurd as it might sound, let him be just another guy on the Nike roster.

Wait for him to give you something brilliant on the golf course to use. And I think everyone reading this is certain he will. Celebrate his every accomplishment, but stop forcing it. Nike Golf is bigger than Tiger Woods…at least it should be.

We loved the initial Tiger and Rory spot. It was brilliant. It was funny, and it presented one of those rare moments when Tiger came across as genuine and likable. That matters.

The other Tiger stuff you've done…the "Winning Takes Care of Everything", the Earl Woods spot after the scandal; one is smug, the other is distasteful, and neither did anything to bring people to the Nike Golf Brand. Both made me think less of Nike Golf, and I'm certain I'm not alone.

Oh sure…predictably some people ate it up, because they love Tiger, they loved you for it, but that's what politicians call playing to your base. It gets your crowd fired up, but when the dust settles you're nowhere, but where you started.

Let's be honest, even Tiger's biggest fans would likely concede that he's not the most charismatic athlete Nike has ever had on the roster. He's not Michael Jordan. He's not Bo Jackson. He's probably not Lance Armstrong either, and even if he was, when applied to golf, the model is flawed.

Finding the guy – or even the guys (if you want to throw Rory in there too) – and building your brand around him, is never going to work in golf.  You'll sell a lot of shirts, and some shoes too, but filling a golf bag with 2 grand worth of gear, it's never going to happen. It takes more than one guy…more than two guys to do that. It takes a smart company and a diversified marketing strategy.

Michael Jordan won 72 games over the 1995-1996 season. 1 season, 72 wins. It has taken Tiger 17 years to win 78 times on the PGA Tour. I know…that's a stupid comparison. Basketball isn't golf. It's apples and oranges.

This isn't a statement on who Tiger Woods is as a golfer, a person, or a pitchman. I'm not drinking any hater-aid. Nobody is arguing that Tiger isn't the greatest golfer on the planet right now. Any brand in golf should be a stronger retail force with Tiger on the roster.

He's not the face of the brand, he's the shoulders of the brand. He and he alone carries them – and that's no model for long-term success in the golf industry, especially for a company that aspires to be #1.

Until Nike Golf figures out how to climb off of Tiger's shoulders and adopts a strategy that focuses on the equipment and not the athlete, and does so in a way that's genuine-enough to resonate with the consumer, they'll only go as far as Tiger can carry them…and he's already carried them about as far as any one man can.

Robert Golic's Son Jake Definitely will Transfer from Notre Dame to be able to Cincinnati.

Over the past 40 years, the Golic name has grown to be synonymous with Notre Dame sports. That era is now going to an end as Cincinnati. com information that Mike Golic's youngster Jake will transfer meant for 2013 (h/t CFB Talk).

Jake was never capable to crack the starting choice at tight end with the Irish, playing behind Tyler Eifert along with Kyle Rudolph. He is immediately eligible at Cincinnati and really should have a shot at relevance.

He will want to help the Bearcats plug the void left from tight end by third-round draft pick Travis Kelce. His competition for any starting job will be Blake Annen, who simply has three career receptions meant for 35 yards.

Mike Golic is a well-known alumnus thanks so that you can his ESPN radio show "Mike and Mike" along with his eight seasons within the NFL. Mike's brother Robert was also a Notre Dame protective tackle and former pro player, and his eldest son Mike Jr. just deceased the Irish program.

The Golic Notre Dame legacy can be legendary as any within college football, but it has now come to a screeching halt together with the news of the move.

Golic marks the second former Irish player to help you transfer to Cincinnati the following offseason. Quarterback Gunner Kiel announced his departure for the Bearcats in May.

The two former Irish players do not hit the field along as Kiel must sit out due to transfer rules, but having them together land in Cincinnati is mostly a unique storyline in a right.

While Golic appeared to be unable to make a mark over the Irish program, he provides a new start and an open door with the Bearcats.

Calif. High School Senior Tosses 66-Pitch Perfect Game, Celebrates With Even More Efficient Tweet

He doesn't look a thing like Kenny Powers (see previous post), but Michael Strem brings the Thunder anyway. Strem, the only senior on the St. Francis High School of Mountain View (CA) roster, threw a 66-pitch perfect game to lead the Lancers over Monta Vista of Cupertino, 2-0, in the Central Coast Section Div. I playoffs last week.

Yeah, that's 66 pitches in a seven-inning game, or an average of 9.4 pitches per inning. That's amazing for any pitcher in a high school game, let alone in the playoffs. It was the first perfect game in school history.

You may remember the St. Francis baseball program from such hits as Eric Byrnes (who went on to play for the A's and Diamondbacks), Dan Nava (Red Sox), Daniel Descalso (Cardinals) and John Gall (Marlins, 2008 Olympic baseball team); plus Doug Cosbie (Cowboys All-Pro tight end) and Linda Cardellini (Freaks and Geeks! and Mad Men). Also for its heated West Catholic Athletic League rivalry with nearby Serra High of San Mateo, which produced Barry Bonds and Tom Brady.

Mark Cardinalli drove in the game's only runs with a single in the sixth inning. Aside from that, Monta Vista's Peter Stern matched Strem zero for zero. Stern allowed three hits, walked three and struck out eight in six innings.

Strem had eight strikeouts, and word on the street (that street is about seven miles from where I'm writing this) is that he's heading to Boston College in the fall.

Toronto Raptors: Can the Raptors Generate a Push into the Playoffs Following that Season?

Go on season had its up and downs to your Toronto Raptors. They started out the season horribly. It seemed like Toronto may well once again be one of several bottom-feeders of the East Conference.

Right after Andrea Bargnani occurred with an arm injury inside of a game against the Portland Trailblazers, the Raptors seemed to pick up the pace. With Ed Davis inside the starting power forward video slot machine, the Raptors now possessed two big men with Davis and Jonas Valanciunas who defended the paint, grabbed rebounds on both ends within the floor and made several baskets here and truth be told there.

The Raptors seemed to be poised to manufacture a push for the playoffs, as they were creeping up to your eighth spot, and things have also been going in the right direction.

Then, in a reasonably unexpected move, the Raptors traded gone longtime Raptor Jose Calderon and Ed Davis for the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for one of many elite small forwards for the game in Rudy Homosexual. Gay finally gave the Raptors the small forward they were on the lookout for.

Since the Gay exchange, the Raptors were 18-18 to end off the season, right with the. 500 mark. If this were to happen throughout the whole time of year, so to speak, the Raptors would are typically the playoffs and would have given Miami a more suitable run for their money compared to a Bucks did.

With Gay, the Raptors now have someone who are able to create his own chance, and although some of his shot selections will not be the best, Rudy Gay and lesbian can score. His defense is in addition above average, using his length and wingspan to guard opposing small forwards and additionally, at times, power forwards.

The true result of the trade will be seen soon, but for the potential season, it looks like Bryan Colangelo made a smart move. The chemistry between Rudy and DeMar DeRozan got better as the season followed, and it seemed like they complemented 1 very well near the conclusion of the season.

To comprehend chemistry under their belt, the following young Raptors squad could definitely make the playoffs next season. DeMar DeRozan and Jonas Valanciunas continue to be young and are key pieces to this fact team's future.

Terrence Ross may not result in being a starter with that acquisition of Gay, but he could possibly be sixth man who provides defense, athleticism and the three-point shot off the bench. Ross struggled go on season, but he was just a rookie and is still learning the adventure at the NBA amount.

With Bryan Colangelo not any longer the general manager, all Raptor fans are wondering what the new general manager may do so that they can improve this team.

They don't have much cap space or room, so free agents are not going to solve anything in the long run, and they have no picks in such a draft, so the the very first thing Raptor fans can toned on is chemistry, hoping this team learns to employ each other in order to make a push for a playoffs.

It is safe to imply this upcoming season could be the most exciting one, and it will definitely come by using huge expectations. The playoffs may not be guaranteed, but this Raptors team can actually make a push following season.

Wayne Rooney: Where Would Manchester United Striker Fit in at Chelsea?

Transfer sagas traditionally dominate summers bereft of international action, and the coming months will be no different.

Gareth Bale and Christian Benteke signing new contracts with their respective clubs will disappoint the nation's media, but the Wayne Rooney discussion is certain to keep the papers ticking over.

Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed that Manchester United had rejected a transfer request from Rooney following his non-appearance against Swansea, and now The Mirror believe Chelsea are going all in for him.

Mourinho would love to manage Rooney. He thinks he can get him back to his best and use him in a similar way to how Didier Drogba operated for Chelsea.

It seems all but set for the Manchester United stalwart to leave the club this summer, and with it being his second transfer request, the club would be wise to move him on.

They're facing a difficult summer following the departure of SAF, and incoming David Moyes successfully sued Rooney for more than £500,000 worth of damages for libel following comments in the player's autobiography back in 2008.

Right from the off the relationship is frictious, and moving the player on would make for a much easier first summer in charge at the biggest club in the world.

Chelsea are one of a select group of clubs that could compete with and match the £250,000-per-week Rooney pulls in and have the profile and squad to appease his standards.

Rooney's future at Manchester United seemed more and more likely to be in central midfield as the season wore on, and judging by numerous player comments, he wasn't exactly delighted about that.

No doubt, his No. 1 priority when negotiating with other clubs will be the prerequisite of him playing as a striker, and Chelsea just so happen to have a question mark in that position.

The Mirror's aforementioned source suggests Rooney could be Chelsea's next Didier Drogba, and that expected manager Jose Mourinho would love to coax the best out of the England international.

The Blues' legendary striker would often put the team on his back and carry them up the field, and while they have a very (physically) similar player to him in Romelu Lukaku on the books, it's clear Mourinho isn't willing to hang his hat on him.

Further reports of Mourinho's interest in taking Napoli hitman Edinson Cavani to Chelsea have abounded (via The Guardian), and these constant links spell bad news for Lukaku and Fernando Torres.

A tough-tackling defensive midfielder has emerged as a need for Chelsea, but a dynamic, attacking one has not given the transformation of David Luiz and extended contract of Frank Lampard.

If Rooney joins Chelsea it will be on his own terms, and those terms will be mega wages combined with an assured position of striker.

Would Chelsea fans like to see Rooney lead the line, or see Lukaku given the chance to become the next Drogba instead?

Tottenham Hotspur as opposed to. Sunderland: Final score 1-0, Spurs complete their part, but... : SB Nation.

Your Gareth Bale-inspired 1-0 win proved not to matter after Arsenal's win at Newcastle consigned them to fifth place.

Tottenham Hotspur are generally consigned to fifth set after winning 1-0 from home against Sunderland only to locate their Champions League aspirations thwarted by an System victory. For most within the match, the visitors' goal was protected by some a little like witchcraft, but although Gareth Bale ultimately put Spurs ahead rather late, it was most for naught.

The earliest half was rather regretably marred by refereeing debate. The best chance either needed break the deadlock came inside 20th minute, when Bale blew on the defence and was wrestled to the ground by Sebastian Larsson. Planning on a penalty, the winger has been distraught when Andre Marriner, 45 yards behind the engage in, instead showed him a good yellow card for diving -- a ridiculous decision which will have major ramifications.

There seemed to be another penalty shout later on, when Jack Colback impeded Bale's fizzing shot regarding his left arm, and Spurs would have felt rightly aggrieved they will went into the break at 0-0. But we were looking at also somewhat fortunate to never be behind, relying for a superb save from Hugo Lloris to remain Connor Wickham's close selection shot out following several excellent work from Danny Graham.

The 2nd half didn't go better for Tottenham. Adebayor saw Carlos Cuellar block the ball with his hand (penalty not offered, of course, because bolt the rules). Tom Huddlestone fired just over from around range. A series of implausible goalline blocks and woodwork hits kept the hosts away. Meanwhile, news hit White Hart Lane that Arsenal were ahead at Newcastle, an effect that would keep Spurs in fifth irrelevant of how well they would against Sunderland.

The process was pretty obvious. Tottenham elevate the pitch, get a large part, waste the corner, find the ball back, go up the pitch etc and so on etc ., but they simply weren't seeking the goals they needed. There was a moment of humor when false news on the Newcastle equaliser arrived, but even had the Gunners dropped points it never looked like Spurs were going to help breach Simon Mignolet's defend.

But a moment involving madness from David Vaughan brought Spurs some hope. The midfielder noticed Aaron Lennon in maximum flight, wiping him out without ever getting anywhere near to the ball, and was duly exhibited his second yellow card in the evening. Down to fifteen men, was there in any manner that the visitors could hold on?

No. Because Gareth Bale. For the reason that is his wont, he took matters into his well-known hands and fired Spurs on the lead 89 minutes. That it was a 25-yard effort, and flew straight into the top corner. In a other context it would have been magnificent... but with Arsenal holding on at Newcastle, celebrations had been muted. Eventually, the effect was confirmed: Tottenham had didn't qualify for the Winners League.

Here’s A Person Doing A Gazillion Consecutive Backflips On A Pogo-Stick And Apparently Setting A World Record

Can you do 15 backflips in a row, on a pogo stick? Probably not, because this is apparently a world record. Or at least that's what the redditor who posted this video (who also appears to be the pogo-jumper), typed. So, it must be true. Just as everything on the internet is true, everything on reddit is doubly true.

Fantastic, but a better video would be a less talented individual trying to accomplish this feat, and setting a world record with the exact opposite result: falling on his/her head 15 consecutive times. I will get on it and report back.

Belmont Limits 2013: Oxbow, Orb along with Top Contenders in Final Triple Crown Race.

Your 2013 Belmont Stakes (Saturday, June 8) has far less at stake this time around as compared to many had hoped—the legendary third leg for the Triple Crown doesn't mean so much when two different horses win in the Kentucky Derby and this Preakness Stakes—but this still is a great race.

With severe contenders like Derby successful Orb and Preakness success Oxbow decorating an presently impressive field, the excitement surrounding the Belmont Stakes is still very high despite no choice of a Triple Crown victorious one.

After a huge win with the Preakness Stakes, Oxbow gets the momentum coming into Belmont Park to steal the show and two-thirds of the Triple Crown.

Not only did Oxbow earn last weekend—his first get since January—the sixth-place finish with the Derby despite the poor conditions proves he is among the most elite horses of 2013.

If ever the course at Churchill Downs wasn't thus bad, maybe Oxbow could be running for his other Triple Crown win instead of his second.

With celebrated trainer D. Wayne Lukas with his corner and Arena of Fame jockey Gary Stevens on his back, Oxbow has the pedigree, skills and support system to steal the Belmont victory.

The 2013 Kentucky Derby winner struggled right out of the gate at the Preakness Stakes, but despite the displaced time, Orb was still able to finish a very commendable fourth overall. That type of strength shows why the following horse won the Derby.

Now Orb must focus on having to leave the gates clean and additionally using his elite stamina to remain him running fast relating to the longer Belmont Park observe. At 1. 5 mile after mile, the Belmont is the longest for the three Triple Crown limbs.

The field will be larger this time than with the Preakness, but with Orb's ability to maneuver through traffic, the greater group of horses actually could possibly be an advantage.

After using commanding early lead within the 2013 Kentucky Derby, Palace Malice appeared finishing a dreadful 12th overall. Now the horse will look for his redemption within the longer Belmont Stakes.

Directed by elite trainer Todd Some. Pletcher, Palace Malice will try and quiet the talk he wears out over the races longer compared to a mile by running a smarter line at Belmont Park and not building such a big lead so early.

As an alternative to using all of his stamina developing a lead, this horse has to save it for your last-second push.

This form of transport had five different jockeys over his last five backrounds, and with such a negative finish at the Derby, whether Mike Smith is funding the saddle for the Belmont is mostly a storyline horse-racing fans must pay attention to going forward.

Anderson Silva Practically Retired and Left MMA Before Ever Fighting within the UFC.

Is usually seems impossible to visualize, Anderson Silva almost walked far from MMA years before becoming quite possibly the most dominant champion in UFC the past.

During a Resource TV interview with MMA Heat's Karyn Bryant, Silva mentioned wanting to end his fighting days following conclusion of his five-bout function in PRIDE, which wrapped up in two submission failures to Daiju Takase and Ryo Chonan.

As "The Spider" advised Fuel TV, his dream was "lost" after competing in the international circuit, where he'd "nothing" to show for his efforts:

One morning, I talked to Rogerio and Rodrigo—"I you can forget fight, bro. " The time period Rogerio and Rodrigo talked for me, I [had] nothing. Your dream [was] lost. Rodrigo talked in my opinion [and said], "Hey, come to my house. I'll assist you. No worry. Come here, train together. "

I finished my contract in PRIDE. I broke that team [up]. The guys talked for me [and said], "Hey, most people no fight more around PRIDE. " What? I fight in PRIDE. Fantastic fights. I have no worries in PRIDE. But Rodrigo improved me, for better spats.

Perhaps if it wasn't with the Nogueria brothers, whom Silva says he loves like her own family, the entire landscape of the sport would've been numerous.

But Silva would eventually resume MMA, with his last fight in PRIDE evolving into his legitimate loss in the sport (so far).

After having a 3-1 campaign between local promotions Cage Rage and Rumble over the Rock—marred only by your DQ loss to Yushin Okami—Silva found his tactic to the UFC middleweight dividing, dominating Chris Leben and additionally starting his road to your title that he's held ever since.

Fuel TV is already running Silva's interview with Byrant basically segments via YouTube, where one can see the pound-for-pound titan speak about being "the black Dana White" and additionally why he doesn't always fight Brazilians in your Octagon.

5 NBA Teams That will actually Change Their Names.

Using the New Orleans Pelicans letting go the nickname "Hornets, " the Charlotte Bobcats are finally going to reclaim their old Hornets moniker with a name change, and me and my juicer there a handful from other teams who should follow suit.

According to be able to CBSSports. com, the Bobcats are starting the approach that should allow it to reclaim the Hornets nickname early on of the 2014-15 period, officially making them the Charlotte Hornets all over again.

Larry Johnson, Alonzo Mourning and Muggsy Bogues may not be on the way into Charlotte, but at least a league will finally be able to rid itself of the generic Bobcats nickname, and Charlotte can make contact with having the fresh blue and yellow uniforms.

Not surprisingly, the Bobcats aren't the sole team in the NBA who remain misnamed. There are a few still scattered about who definitely have an overly generic name, a silly remnant for the past or a a bed that just doesn't make feeling.

For instance, the L . a . Lakers nickname comes off their days as the Minneapolis Lakers. They would always play in a town surrounded by lakes, but now they're a coastal team within a city surrounded by silicone.

At this point that Lakers are too steeped in history for anybody to even look at a name change, but the point that they're named after a part that's a solid 3, 000 miles away is very humorous.

In the interest of righting wrongs, which the league has done considerably as of late, it's time to trace the teams still in need of a name change.

Nyc Jets Running Back Break down: Complete Evaluation, Depth Data Analysis.

Competition will be the buzzword this summer in Manhattan. Within the Jets institution competition is everywhere both relating to the field and off than it. While the most discussed competition will inevitably as the one at quarterback, the most intense and many intriguing one is a one at running rear.

After four years while using team, Shonn Greene is actually allowed to leave is now a Tennessee Titan. Inside his place are four starting quality running buttocks, each trying to break through in the NFL. Arguably all four consultants are more skilled than Greene, yet none of those has a secure roster spot at this time.

Chris Ivory is in all likelihood the most fascinating within the bunch. While he has ridden in the radar so far in his career, he has demonstrated flashes of brilliance which will imply that he gets the highest ceiling of any kind of them. In college for Washington State, he exhibited his high motor, going for 534 yards with 5. 9 yards for carry.

Ivory spent the rest of his college career in Division II, causing him going undrafted. However, even in his rookie season inside NFL he showed that they was ready to participate in. While injuries have been a frequent issue designed for him and his durability may be questioned, his raw ability along with drive are what make him a great strong value and supply him such high potential.

Ivory came over through the Saints in a trade this offseason and may also easily be viewed as being the overall favorite to gain the starting job.

A former fourth-round pick just last year, Mike Goodson was snagged by way of the Jets in free business this spring. After stints while using the Carolina Panthers and Oakland Raiders, it seemed that Goodson was perhaps travelling to get his opportunity to get started. That was before Ivory was acquired. Now Goodson will ought to compete with Ivory beyond just the rest of the running backs relating to the roster.

To makes things more complicated, he was recently arrested on charges based on drug possession and possession of a firearm. Goodson remains on the team at the present, but release, suspension or jail time are generally possible consequences that help keep him off the niche.

As arguably the a large number of durable and physically reliable back to the team, it had seemed exceptionally likely that Goodson would obtain a spot on this company and earn carries. Then again, the recent arrest might put a damper on the whole situation.

A backup together with the Jets since he was drafted really, Joe McKnight badly wants being a starter now that they are entering his fourth year or so. McKnight emphasized this to Mark Cannizzaro with NYPost. com, saying, "Words can't even describe how badly I must be that guy. I've got a benefit, a fire to people... When I'm out there practicing it's like So i am [ticked] off. I've have to play the game [ticked] off of. "

McKnight is a effective back and has excelled in terms of yards per carry (6. 0 in 2012) in his three previous years along with the Jets. However, his carries have been quite few with him sitting associated with Shonn Greene and Bilal Powell relating to the depth chart.

His abilities to be a special teams player, which earned him a spot on the All-Pro power team in 2011, essentially assurance him a roster location barring unforeseen events. Nonetheless, if he finds himself in the No. 3 or Zero. 4 spot on that running back depth chart, he will not find out many carries.

One thing we do know for sure is that McKnight is going to do whatever he can to hold his roster spot. They have been exceptionally vocal along with fiery this offseason. As he said on his own (via Connor Orr of the Star-Ledger), "They're going to own to kill me to take the my spot. So, whoever they add, I don't care. inches

At the end for the 2012 season, it may have been very reasonable to see Powell as the incumbent most desired to finally start this current year. Especially once Greene was officially permitted to leave via free company, Powell seemed to become almost a sure thing to start, with him being more versatile even more reliable than McKnight.

While using the arrivals of Ivory along with Goodson, Powell's situation together with the team is now a major question mark. If he falls to be able to third or fourth relating to the depth chart, it is conceivable which he could lose his roster see entirely, since he is not really heavily used on wonderful teams. However, one would hope that given the promise they have shown so far with the team that they'll find a way to keep him on the roster.

General manager John Idzik made his job by stacking this approach year's roster with skilled running backs. Now head coach Rex Jones and offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg will need to figure out the easiest method to use their overabundance of backs.

There should not come to be one true winner of this competition, at least not really by Week 1. The Jets have generally gone with a running back by committee approach over the Rex Ryan era. Still, someone will have to take most of the snaps in Week 1.

Given the data available right now, the clear favorite really need to be Ivory. He is just about the most explosive back on the team and is arguably the most respectable in pass protection.

Golf film on Ivory in the Saints, while limited, demonstrates a tremendous upside. As long as he will remain healthy (which is naturally an uncertainty), he should be viewed as the favorite to win its competition this summer.

ESPN Director John Skipper Isn’t Scared Of Fox Sports 1… Should He Be?

Richard Deitsch's daily media column is upward, and you should read the whole thing (as you should just about every week), if you want to buy it in the fascinating activities media circlejerk, as efficient. If not, you probably don't like our site close to our fishy features from Paulina Gretzky and Kate Upton (but they've out dated athletes! ), and people apologize. Among this week's tips, as is the case invest in, is ESPN. ESPN is the Worldwide Leader in Athletic on TV, which requires it to be the Worldwide Leader around Snark Received and Well deserved, and Competitors Gunning For. Fox Sports 1 launches on August 17, and it looks like a legit threat to ESPN. But Deitsch interviewed ESPN president John Skipper, and he asserted his deficiency of fear. The message: we've been ESPN and we manipulate your lives. We will not be scared of this "fox. " Doesn't it have a hound to go befriend?

"The guys at Fox are smart and efficient respectful of what they do but you heard from us a substantial level of confidence, " Skipper talked about. "We like what we have and we like our capability to compete. Two things matter in the final analysis of the day: What's your level of service and what subscription fees think you're getting from that, and what is the live content you might want to put on that fans want? I would ask everybody writing all of these stories about competition to look at what we actually get and what they actually have before there's any discussion about a head-to-head competition. "

Properly, he's right. While I do believe that Fox Sports Are living, the show, will severely challenge SportsCenter, that doesn't necessarily indicate Fox Sports 1, that channel, will challenge ESPN, a behemoth mind-controller.

Also: he or she (in)directly called me available! I am writing regarding this competition, so I will "look at what they have before there's any discussion of a head-to-head competition. " Next, I will discuss that head-to-head competition (alright, We discussed it before, merely leave me alone).

MLB: 26 Weekend afternoon games; All-Star Sport; one League Championship Sequence; World Series Lots from NFL NASCAR F1 Men's/Women's Football World Cup's, 2015-2022

So, ESPN=Russia, Additional Channels=North Korea. They talk a great game and may involve some powerful weapons, but they've been not huge threats. There are other sports that exist that you may watch, too (many at ESPN3), and guess precisely what: ESPN has most ones! They've got Sri Lanka Premier League Cricket, CFL, KHL (read by means of best Russian accent: if perhaps Russia is ally, corporation is invincible).

Many of Fox Sports' rights are widely-used on Fox, not their particular sports channels, too. They're not necessarily switching NFL to Fox Sports 1, so that doesn't help even though it seems. Basically, ESPN is declared the winner. People will always check out ESPN, because people might always watch the NBA, NASCAR — every one of these 17 million sports them to broadcast.

If ESPN shows a naked Skip Bayless fornicating which includes a naked Tim Tebow while Chris Broussard analyzes, horrified, with LZ Granderson crying with the background, people will (justifiably, obviously) freak out, but basketball fans could still watch the NBA, together with stupid people (I'm kidding, I swear) will still watch NASCAR. To do so, they will turn with ESPN.

Again, I imagine Fox Sports Live can cut significantly into SportsCenter's viewership. There's no way to be positive, but I think/hope it will be a better product, and force SportsCenter to rotate. But that will be described as a tiny dent in ESPN's In terms of iron Man suit, and Iron Man fails to care about the teeny dent in his swimsuit, beyond aesthetic reasons. At this point, Fox Sports 1 is a minor annoyance, a little kid running while in front of Iron Man while he or she is trying to kill somebody.

How committed is Skipper to the ESPN2 afternoon lineup involving Highly Questionable and SportsNation? "We are dedicated to those shows, " Skipper talked about. "We are in the method of looking at a better studio for Questionable — we think more to a live environment, one with a studio environment might job. As for SportsNation, it's very revolutionary when this came on. The sharp graphics, the look, the feel from it. Michelle Beadle and Colin Cowherd did an ideal job. We moved it to help LA and we wanted the live feel of it. We have to take into consideration what is next. It really has been reported that Charissa Thompson is likely to leave so we don't have decisions yet. Nothing [on talent] may be decided but we work on it. But this I'm able to guarantee: It is on the air this year. It is on the air up coming year. And the year after that. We have the ability to keep things on, have consistency and turn patient. "

There people go. SportsCenter could get rid of its entire viewership (it won't), and ESPN could still afford to produce it. That is some sort of exaggeration, but it's a fact. ESPN truly is the Russia with the sports media landscape. King Dictator "President" associated with a massive and potent country in which flaws abound, Putin will end regularly feasting on a wild boar he killed just by only using his thumbs, and next he will bathe in the pile of rubles, unconcerned for the public's major problems, because they're insignificant to him. He then will kill a hippopotamus using a spork.

NFL draft: 10 things to watch for during draft

NEW YORK (AP) — Since 1936, the NFL has picked the best of college football to join the pro league. From the very first pick — Jay Berwanger, who also was the first bust, never playing a down in the NFL — to last year's No. 1, Andrew Luck, the draft has always offered plenty of intrigue for teams and fans.

How many hugs can Roger Goodell endure from all the burly offensive and defensive players expected to be selected in the first round? Last year, he embraced many first-round picks who took the stage and was nearly hugged into submission by the likes of Fletcher Cox, Dontari Poe and Melvin Ingram.

Will any quarterbacks be taken in the first round? Possibilities include Geno Smith, Matt Barkley and EJ Manuel, but this is far from the glamour year of 2012, when QBs were huge: Luck, No. 1; Robert Griffin III, No. 2; Ryan Tannehill (No. 8); Brandon Weeden (No. 22). The last time no quarterback was taken in round one was 1996 (Tony Banks was a second-rounder, No. 42, by the Rams); the last time only one was taken was 2001 (Michael Vick, first overall) and the last time two were taken was 2010 (Sam Bradford and Tim Tebow).

Fashionistas surely will be tracking the expensive, colorful designer suits, hairstyles (think dreadlocks) and even socks of the draftees as they take the stage after being selected. (Think Griffin, the Redskins' top pick in 2012, who wore a baby blue jacket, checkered-patterned shirt, purplish tie with horizontal stripes, and burgundy and gold socks with the words "GO CATCH YOUR DREAM."

When that will be exactly is anyone's guess. Some analysts have Notre Dame's All-American linebacker Manti Te'o back to being a first-round cinch, even after a great season was marred by a poor game against Alabama followed by the hoax involving a deceased "girlfriend." He did not perform well at the NFL combine, but did better at pro day in South Bend.

Watch for all the beef early in the first round. There's a chance seven of the first 10 picks could be really big fellas. Among them are offensive linemen Luke Joeckel (306 pounds), Eric Fisher (306), Chance Warmack (317), Lane Johnson (303) and Jonathan Cooper (311); and defensive linemen Sharrif Floyd (297) and Ziggy Ansah (271).

A year ago, the national champions had four players picked: RB Trent Richardson (No. 3), SS Mark Barron (No. 7), CB Dre Kirkpatrick (No.17) and LB Dont'a Hightower (No. 25). National champs again, there are five that could end up as first-rounders: Warmack, cornerback Dee Milliner, offensive tackle D.J. Fluker, defensive tackle Jesse Williams, and running back Eddie Lacy.

Every year, a slew of players with family ties to the NFL are draft eligible. This year is no exception, with a few dozen all-in-the-family connections. Among them are QBs Nate Montana (son of Joe Montana) and Jordan Rodgers (brother of Aaron Rodgers), Jake Ryan (son of Pat Ryan), Duron Carter (son of Cris Carter), Luke Tasker (son of Steve Tasker), Kyle Long (son of Howie Long, brother of Chris Long) and Baker Steinkuhler (son of Dean Steinkuhler).

A total of 32 former NFL players will be announcing second- and third-round picks for teams, including newly elected Hall of Famers Jonathan Ogden (Ravens), Warren Sapp (Buccaneers) and Dave Robinson (Packers). Others making picks for their former teams include Deion Sanders (Falcons) and Larry Little (Dolphins).

Hayden was moments from death last November after an on-field collision with a teammate tore a blood vessel off the back of his heart. He was taken to a hospital, underwent lifesaving surgery, and now could be a first-round pick. He ran a 4.33 40-yard dash at Houston's pro day in March, and now he'll wait to see if a team believes his talent and speed is worth the risk.

In 2011, Lattimore tore the ACL in his left knee midway through the season. He returned last year, and in October, the star running back suffered a horrific injury to his right knee against Tennessee — it was dislocated and ligaments were damaged as he was tackled. He had surgery a month later, continued rehabbing, and at South Carolina's pro day recently he impressed NFL scouts so much they applauded after his workout. He says he's confident he'll be ready to play when the 2013 season starts.

As the draft draws to a close Saturday, the fun revs up with the final pick, aka Mr. Irrelevant. As they did last year, the Colts have the honor at pick No. 254. Last year, they went for Northern Illinois quarterback Chandler Harnish (Andrew Luck was the Colts' other QB pick — at No. 1 overall). The last pick will be awarded the Lowsman (opposite of Heisman) Trophy during a weeklong celebration at the Balboa Bay Club in Newport Beach, Calif. In 2012, Harnish's first trip to California included golf at Big Canyon Country Club, a visit to Disneyland and parties galore. The founder of Irrelevant Week is Paul Salata, a former USC and NFL receiver. The first Mr. Irrelevant was WR Kelvin Kirk in 1976.

5 Best Contenders Named to 2013 Rimington Trophy Watch List

The watch list for the 2013 Rimington Trophy has been released, and it includes 44 players in all. The award will be handed out to the most outstanding center in college football at the end of the season.

Center is often a position that is overlooked in today's game. With most focused solely on the skill position players, a lot of the stars wouldn't be as well-known if it wasn't for a productive and aggressive offensive line. The award was first introduced in 2000, and it's good to see this position receive some credit for the job these guys do.

Top prep prospect Andrew Wiggins to attend Kansas

The 6-foot-8 Toronto native signed a letter-of-intent Tuesday, choosing the Jayhawks over Kentucky, North Carolina and Florida State.

The ceremony ended the frenzied pursuit of the Huntington Prep star, who averaged 23.4 points and 11.2 rebounds per game this season.

Rather than turn his announcement into a spectacle, Wiggins wanted a private signing ceremony with family and friends where he attends classes at St. Joseph's Central Catholic High School in Huntington.

Initially rated as a 2014 prospect, Wiggins shot to the top of recruiting charts when he decided last October to reclassify into his original high school class of 2013. The four major recruiting services rated Wiggins as the No. 1 overall recruit.

Wiggins had kept quiet on his intentions. He had yet to even make a verbal commitment and delayed his signing until almost the very end — Wednesday is the deadline for recruits to sign with NCAA Division I schools.

Interest grew in recent weeks. As one fan put told Wiggins in a Twitter post, "You're driving 4 schools and 4 fan bases absolutely insane."

Wiggins' game did the talking. He has the ability to make shots from all angles and distances, blow past defenders to the basket and reach the rim at eye level. Wiggins was the recipient of this year's Gatorade Boys National Basketball Player of the Year and Naismith Foundation national awards. He has been called the best prep prospect since LeBron James.

Wiggins participated in several postseason all-star games, most recently playing for the World Select Team at the Nike Hoop Summit April 20 in Portland, Ore.

Wiggins cited fatigue from the Oregon trip for canceling scheduled visits from North Carolina coach Roy Williams, Kansas' Bill Self and Florida State's Leonard Hamilton. Wiggins instead talked to them by phone. Kentucky coach John Calipari had visited Wiggins in Huntington on March 28.

Rob Fulford, Wiggins' coach at Huntington Prep, has said he tried to stay out of the player's decision, other than explaining to him what to look for in a program.

"What I do during the recruiting process is make sure you understand the style of play, coaching styles and can you see yourself playing for this team, this coach and these teammates," Fulford said. "Because that's mainly what it boils down to. Don't worry about buildings. Everybody has a nice practice facility."

While mulling his decision, Wiggins had to sort out family matters and figuring out who he might have to share the court with.

His Huntington Prep teammate and fellow Toronto native, Xavier Rathan-Mayes, signed with Florida State in December. Both of Wiggins' parents attended Florida State.

His father is former NBA first-round pick Mitchell Wiggins. His mother, Marita Payne-Wiggins, was a Canadian Olympic sprinter and silver medalist. Older brother Nick plays guard at Wichita State and another brother, Mitchell Jr., plays at NAIA school Southeastern University in Lakeland, Fla.

Despite the loss of Ben McLemore to the NBA draft, four of Kansas' five recruits are considered to be in the top 50 nationally.

Besides Rathan-Mayes, three other Huntington Prep teammates signed at Division I schools: Moses Kingsley at Arkansas, Dominic Woodson at Baylor and Travon Landry at Tennessee.

Preakness 2013 Results: Live Analysis and Twitter Reaction

The Preakness often seems to be in the shadow of the more famous Kentucky Derby, but the second jewel of thoroughbred racing's Triple Crown is often a sensational race.

Saturday's 138th Preakness features Kentucky Derby winner Orb, who will be trying to establish his greatness by winning the second of the Big Three races.

If Orb is victorious, he will have a chance to go for the Triple Crown at the Belmont Stakes in early June. There has not been a Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978.

Orb demonstrated sensational ability in the Derby, coming from near the back of the pack to defeat a 20-horse field. While there are only nine horses in the Preakness, he faces a big challenge because tactics in the 1 3/16ths mile race often determine who wins and who disappoints.

Orb will break from the rail at Pimlico—the Baltimore track that hosts the Preakness—and that could be a problem for a horse that likes to come from behind and does not want to get caught up in traffic.

Rome Masters 2013: Highlighting Biggest Disappointments at Italian Open

The Rome Masters is the last stop for a majority of tennis' top stars before they gear up for the season's second Grand Slam: the French Open at Roland Garros.

Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer have been strong to this point on the men's side, and top-ranked female players Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka have cruised through the women's draw.

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic has been inconsistent since knocking off Rafael Nadal in Monte Carlo last month. He lost in the second round of the Madrid Masters to Grigor Dimitrov and was defeated by Tomas Berdych in the quarterfinals of Rome this week.

Djokovic struggled mightily in his return game against Berdych, winning just 20 percent of his first-serve return points for the match.

You have to believe he'll patch up his game before heading to the French Open, but he's missed another golden opportunity to put some doubt in Rafael Nadal's mind before the year's second major.

The fact that Djokovic is considered to be the one guy capable of upending Nadal in Paris this summer is what makes his Rome performance so disappointing.

Following a first-round bye in Rome this week, women's world No. 4 Agnieszka Radwanska turned out a disappointing effort in her first match of the tournament: a second-round loss to Simona Halep.

The 24-year-old Polish star has never been particularly dominant on clay, winning just two career singles titles on the surface and never getting past the fourth round at the French Open. But there's no excuse for dropping the final two sets 1-6, 2-6 to a player ranked No. 64 in the world.

Halep is a clay-court specialist, but if Radwanska is going to contend for the No. 1 ranking, she has to be able to overcome lesser players on challenging surfaces.

After early exits in Madrid and now Rome, Radwanska looks poised for another early exit in the French Open this summer.

It's hard to believe that Juan Martin del Potro hasn't strung together consecutive match wins since Indian Wells last March.

The 6'6" Argentine lost his first match at the Miami Masters soon after Indian Wells and fell in the third round at Monte Carlo last month. And in Rome on Thursday he dropped his third-round match against Benoit Paire, falling in straight sets to the unseeded Frenchman.

The result is a huge disappointment for the 2009 U.S. Open champion, who has won four clay-court tournaments over the course of his career.

Delpo reached the quarterfinals at the French Open in 2012 and the semifinals at Roland Garros four years ago. In between those impressive runs at the French Open, he bowed out in the third round in 2011.

JR Smith Says He Wishes to Retire with New You are able to Knicks After Playoff Escape.

Fresh off of a abysmal performance in the new York Knicks' Eastern Conference semifinal defeat to your Indiana Pacers, the reigning Sixth Man with the Year told reporters that he'd kind of like to stick around ny for a while:

Smith shall be an unrestricted free agent come july 1st, so he'll have a couple options. But with the manner in which he finished out his playoff run while using the Knicks, it's hard to suppose his employer is like jazzed about his likely return (and apparent prefer to stay put for a protracted time) as he is apparently.

The Knicks certainly may not be laughing about Smith's horrendous offensive showing with Pacers, but that doesn't mean the rest of us have to clam all the way up. After all, making jokes at the cost of others is kind of what Twitter is with regard to, isn't it?

Seriously, though, the Knicks are truly going to have to figure out whether Smith's production will the headache of her inconsistency. When Smith attracts fire, he's capable of overpowering games. But as a general asset, he's basically a one-dimensional scorer which gets his points with an extremely inefficient way. Just try to guess which game this tweet originated from:

It's tough, right? Definitely, it could have been from any kind of contest that involved Kirkland. Horrible shooting performances can be that common for him or her. Worse still, he very rarely stops shooting, no topic how cold he may get. Knicks coach Mike Woodson has to sit him down in order that there to be a cease fire.

Maybe Smith is going to be back with the Knicks. If he or she is, it'll signal that The big apple hasn't yet realized this low-percentage, high-volume offensive players were the main problem with the team this current year.

It's cool that Smith is professing his loyalty from loss, but it's hard to imagine that the Knicks are feeling the exact same love right now.

Knicks User James Dolan Falls Asleep from Boredom at Game several vs. Pacers.

While watching his The big apple Knicks get pummeled by way of the Indiana Pacers in Gameplay 4, owner James Dolan fell... well, he fell lying down.

To be truthful, Dolan could still be exhausted within the part he played with running the Knicks business into the ground throughout the last decade or so. So to be even more fair, I'm betting most of folks wish we'd slept because of that awful performance too.

Of course, you'd like to think web pages a billion-dollar franchise may well stand to digest any sort of display by his product or service, however horrific. Dolan is footing the bill for what exactly rapidly turning into some sort of wildly expensive disappointment, not surprisingly. He should see what's happening.

And you can't make it happen with your eyelids finished. Squinting is fine, perhaps even looking away is simple. But a cat quick sleep? At a playoff online game? In an age the place everything we do is captured on getting some sort of camera?

Well, that's not a fact. We actually didn't. Very likely expected less. Perhaps provide just be thrilled you showed up, because this Knicks' offense sure didn't.

Although, you do must wonder, why was he so tired? While a Knicks' performance was remorseful, it was more about to bring you to tears than induce a distinct slumber.

Was Dolan painting metropolis blue and orange by using J. R. Smith the night before after watching his Nyc Rangers win a Online game 7? Just resting up for ones fourth quarter? Dreaming around LeBron James?

Whatever the explanation, Dolan must be thrilled that it series is headed back in New York in Game 5. Not because he has high hopes for his suddenly browbeaten troops, but because I'm guessing he keeps an extra pair of pajamas inside his luxury suite. Likely a pillow, blanket and in many cases a binkie too.

Jake “The Snake” Roberts Sings Take Me Out To The Ballgame At Braves Game, Plans To Win Next Year’s Royal Rumble

This is exactly who Mickey Rourke's The Wrestler is based on. After a lifetime of cocaine and women and booze and snakes and choke slams, Jake "The Snake" Roberts is somehow alive, and looking to turn things around. Apparently, coughing out Take Me Out To The Ballgame is a step in that direction for him. Touching, though it did sound like he could drop dead any moment during the thing.

Next step: Win next year's Royal Rumble. Here he is giving a Randy "The Ram" Robinson-esque mea culpa at some amateur wrestling event, then getting all excited about a return. If the movie is any indication, he'll oversleep the PPV event and cut his hand on a meat slicer…

Bomani Jones that drove me crazy, too. "@freedarko: It's only taken me five years to realize that David Axelrod is named David Axelrod."

Kevin Durant: Serge Ibaka's Shooting Problems 'All in His Mind'

Since missing a game-tying tip-in against the Houston Rockets in Game 4 of the first round, Ibaka is shooting 23-of-66 from the floor (34.8 percent). Most recently, in the Oklahoma City Thunder's Game 3 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies, he went 6-of-17 from the field (35.2 percent).

Ibaka connected on 57.3 percent of his field-goal attempts during the regular season and is a 55.2 percent shooter for his career, so his recent stretch of inefficiency is concerning.

"It's all in his mind," Durant explained (via Ramona Shelburne of ESPN.com). "If he thinks he's going to make those shots, he's going to make them."

Durant added that he and the rest of the Thunder have to help instill confidence in Ibaka moving forward, something the forward himself admitted he was lacking. And they need to do it soon.

Oklahoma City finds itself in a 2-1 hole against a Memphis team it struggled against during the regular season. The Thunder went just 1-2 when facing the Grizzlies this year with Russell Westbrook, and are now attempting to overthrow them without him.

To do that, Durant and company need Ibaka to play defense, but also to knock down his shots. He had a career year in terms of efficiency. The potential for him to be an offensive force is there. Right now, however, he's become something of a liability.

His 42.9 percent conversion rate is nearly 15 percentage points lower than his regular-season clip (57.3). Ibaka's current shooting rut is also the worst of his career.

The 23-year-old has shot below 42 percent from field in four consecutive games. Previously, he had never gone more than three straight games (playoffs included) without knocking down at least 42 percent of his shot attempts, making this bout with inefficiency the longest of his career.

If the Thunder wish to erase their current series deficit and advance past the Grizzlies, they can't expect Durant to do it on his own. They need a more offensively-economical contribution from their supporting cast, specifically Ibaka.

Although plenty of others need to step up—Kevin Martin is shooting just 38.1 percent in the Grizzlies series—Oklahoma City's main concern is Ibaka. Sans Westbrook, he's the Thunder's second-best player, and a 30.8 percent clip for the series just isn't going to cut it.

If Tom Thibodeau Was Okay with Derrick Rose Saga, We Should Be Too

When the final horn sounded and the Miami Heat bounced the Chicago Bulls from the 2013 NBA playoffs, Derrick Rose had not played a single minute of the 2012-13 campaign.

His ACL rehab and highly anticipated return cast a shadow over the entire season, and when he was medically cleared to play in March, his absence fueled a growing controversy.

Rose didn't return to the floor in the eight-to-12-month time frame that was projected, and the Bulls could have used his help in the playoffs. But head coach Tom Thibodeau defended the cautious approach when he addressed reporters:

If we were going to make a mistake, we wanted to make the mistake on the side of caution. We feel good about where he is. He has the whole summer to build more confidence and that's the important thing. As we said when he first had the surgery, we weren't going to rush him back, and we held to that. I think it was the smart decision.

Since Rose was medically cleared on March 9 and opted not to play through May, Bulls fans and league-wide fans began to question his toughness, his mental strength and his commitment to the franchise.

Say what you want about the Bulls' playoff chances if he was on the court. Say what you want about Rose's "selfishness" and doing what's right for himself instead of the team. Say what you want about his mental obstacles to returning.

Sure, the Bulls could have handled the public relations end of things better. But in the end, it doesn't matter what everyone else thinks. What matters is the long-term health of Rose and the entire squad.

Throwing himself into the playoff fray would have been a dicey scenario, even if he had doctors' approval to return.

Rose's style of play is aggressive, slashing and aerial in nature. It involves forays to the rim and encounters with players much bigger and stronger than him.

Making his season debut in the middle of the Miami Heat series would have been extremely difficult on Rose and his teammates. Adjusting to NBA-caliber competition is tough enough, much less in the playoffs against the defending champs.

New York Times columnist Scott Turow reminded us that what is popular is not always right, and that was the case in this Rose saga:

Turow noted that Rose was put under extra pressure by two non-basketball factors: "The Return" advertisement campaign by Adidas and the superhuman ACL recovery by Minnesota Vikings football star Adrian Peterson.

The mid-winter commercials served to stir up the fanbase's anticipation more than usual, and Peterson's astounding return to the gridiron set the bar incredibly high.

Rose and the Bulls didn't let this off-the-court pressure coerce them to bring him back before he was totally physically and mentally ready to play.

No one has a better grip on this situation than Rose, his coaching staff and the rest of the men in that locker room.

Instead of questioning their 2012-13 decision-making, let's look forward to Rose flying all over the court without inhibitions in 2013-14.

Enough of the speculation, the what-ifs and the second-guessing. It's wishful thinking that Rose would have helped the Bulls hoist the 2013 Larry O'Brien trophy and unhealthy to rush him back before he's ready.

The Chicago native took a beating throughout the spring for "not being competitive enough" to help his teammates. That's fine by him. He knows he'll soon have plenty of opportunities to prove his passion and toughness.

Links At Lake Erie Course Review

Michigan has a number of fine links style courses carved through lowlands (and highlands) overlooking the inland seas known as the Great Lakes. In spite of its name, The Links At Lake Erie is not one of them. The only views you will get at this course are of overhead power lines, an RV campground, railroad tracks and a truckstop. It is clearly a former farmstead turned into a course.

Links at Lake Erie was built in 1988, and designed by Michigan based architect Scott Thacker. Thacker also designed Fox Hills' Lakes and Woods courses and New Hudson's Coyote Golf Club.

The layout is entirely flat, save for some mounding and elevated greens. Links at Lake Erie is for the most part wide open, and a wayward shot won't be too costly unless you land in one of the ponds. Water comes into play on twelve of the holes. A couple of dozen bunkers —almost all around the greens—are the course's other defense. However, the fronts of the greens are all open, so landing a shot short and letting it bound up is the safe play for a low score. Once on, the greens putt straight and true.

In all, the layout was not that interesting to me. Hit the ball. Hit the ball again. Putt. I didn't find that it forced many decisions or risk assessments.

The bogey golfer will score well at Links At Lake Erie, which might account for its otherwise inexplicable popularity. From the back tees, it measures 6,575 yards and plays to a 70.0/120. From the middle tees, it measures 6,168 yards and plays to a 67.9/116.

Conditions on the day I played game me the feeling that management was undecided on whether to continue to operate as a golf course, or allow it to return to use as a cow pasture. There was plenty of mowed grass, but the fairway and rough boundaries were not always clear. I also found a lot of wet, soggy areas.

If you live in the area, this might be a course to play on occasion. I cannot, however, recommend that anyone seek it out.

Why Luis Suarez's Liverpool Season Should be Deemed a Success, Truly Failure.

Getting the club late April, Liverpool's Player in the Season award was quite a straightforward matter, and it was subsequently probable that the exact same player would win a Premier League PFA Player in the Year too. There would always be conjecture there, of training course, but an incident occurred at Anfield against Chelsea that will put that argument so that you can bed regardless.

This media reaction was expected, the ensuing 10-match ban within the FA harsh or correct, depending on the stance in the opinionated many. Regardless, it was the end of the season for Suarez, and the program ended his double challenge to win the PFA POTY as well as the Premier League Golden Sneaker awards.

A moment involving madness, which cost the Uruguayan a stint in the sidelines, but this was far from being a microcosm of the season as one.

This year for this Reds was always apt to be one of transition, but it was still a critical building block of precisely what the club aims to achieve from now on. For that reason, it was important for as you will find many senior players as possible to point out their true abilities and qualities normally as possible, to ascertain that they might fit into your long-term plans of Brendan Rodgers.

Criticisms the previous campaign ended up being aimed Suarez's way out of his wayward finishing, his scarcity of continued presence in the box—as if it was his fault nobody as well was regularly scoring—and his perceived simulation. On a personal level, at least, that it was the aim for Suarez to raise on these three issues with his technical and tactical procedure for the game.

During the time of his suspension, Suarez brought about the Premier League prime scorers list with 12 goals in 33 matches, having improved his remodeling rate of shots as a result of some distance and reduced his minutes-per-goal rate from 231 inside the 2011-12 season to merely 128 minutes this term.

Had he not acquired the suspension, the odds are he would have gone by means of hold off the obstacle of Robin van Persie with the final matches of the season to take the Silver Boot.

It wasn't just in his finishing, though, that Suarez had shown his importance on the team. With Andy Carroll financed out and Fabio Borini getting injured, the Uruguayan was the Reds' only senior forward offered to play from October through to January, and he brought about the line with excellent consistency and resilience.

"Where would Liverpool be if he does not for Suarez? " became a repetitive in addition to monotonous complaint from away from the club, as if the Reds would suddenly be starting every last game with 10 men over the pitch and no centre-forward, but there was clearly no doubt that Luis ended up being the go-to man with regard to construction and finishing off attacking moves.

His link-up play remained exemplary, his move fantastic. Defenders tried to be able to double-up on him, simply for his sleight-of-foot to leave them bemused, bamboozled together with horribly exposed.

Even right now, having missed the end-of-season chunk of games, Suarez leads every many other Premier League player in the numerous dribbles-per-game attempted, totalling 95 for any season, and in photos per game, with 187 initiatives overall.

And it had not been just chances for him self he made, but meant for others: In terms involving key passes, Suarez is located third overall, behind sole David Silva and Leighton Baines, having created an average of 2. 7 chances every last match for his Liverpool teammates.

Versatility in his positional play became one factor as the season wore on, and the Reds tough in January, as Suarez operated from the left flank of the attack and in a No. 10 role. Immediately understanding forged with Daniel Sturridge seemed immediately exciting being the pair combined for six goals between them for their first few matches inside the same team.

Hints at what were into the future with Philippe Coutinho finding his feet as well were arguably even more competent at whetting the appetite associated with Reds fans, and it's going to those two linking up—as these people did against Wigan Particular sports so well—that Kopites prefer to see more of following season.

The diving claims receded looking for midseason berating from your management, the Reds were credit scoring more goals than that you had in previous seasons with Suarez within the centre of everything, and all in all, results were on some sort of upward, positive trend, even though they hadn't yet produced the consistency Liverpool were in need of.

A Europa League go with against Zenit St. Petersburg with Anfield showed the drive, passion, commitment, quality and ferocity that define the boiling pit of emotions that is definitely Luis Suarez on a football pitch.

A set of two sumptuous free-kicks fuelled the fire of the particular rage and inspired opinion among thousands where only desperation have been present an hour earlier.

The end result, a disappointment just too in need of another fantastic European comeback was broadcast on the faces of all and on that of Suarez above most.

This game, defeat in Europe inside of a competition that most teams barely certainly want to play around, meant absolutely everything to the No. 7 at that moment.

There was still much more to play for, but ultimately consistency would continue to be the bane of Liverpool's season as they definitely bid for European competition next season just as before. And then, Suarez wasn't part of the latest part of this challenge, after Ivanovic plus the lengthy ban that followed.

It's cost Suarez a lot already, and who realizes, given the potential for summer additions it may possibly even cost him—in stomach muscles will better short-term, no doubt—a devote Liverpool's starting XI right after he returns next season. If he even lingers concerning that long at Anfield, naturally.

He's had this moments, alright. Don't all of top players? But Suarez has the mental ability along with the technical quality with an off-day, go back into exercise and smack in hat-trick three days later within the next game.

Liverpool's year has become up-and-down at times, nonetheless Suarez's, well, Suarez's is actually perpetually up, interspersed with plunging lows from time to time. That's just the way one is, and Liverpool will take him in that position as they try to encourage him to boost his disciplinary record many times over before parting ways with him within their own accord.
