AP Sources: Biogenesis backer trying to sell doping info

NYC (AP) a' An investor who helped launch Anthony Bosch's Biogenesis of America has been attempting to sell purported documents from the closed anti-aging clinic to Major League Baseball and participants, many people knowledgeable about the problem said Friday. MLB has bought a number of the papers, the people said, all talking on condition of anonymity since they weren't authorized to speak openly concerning the situation. MLB has been examining the center for allegedly distributing banned performance-enhancing drugs to participants. MLB's purchase was initially reported Thursday by The New York Times, which mentioned Friday that MLB investigators have "what they believe is evidence" that an agent of Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez acquired medical records. An associate who works closely with Rodriguez denied that the player has ever tried to get the papers, showing The Associated Press the Yankees slugger "doesn't even care" what is in the files. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because Rodriguez did not authorize the release of that information. Those familiar with the specific situation also told the AP that anyone selling the files has called representatives of players and MLB officials in recent months providing the files for an amount. Baseball might attempt to make use of the papers in disciplinary proceedings against players beneath the sport's drug contract. The average person who offered the files will be needed, presumably, to authenticate them in any grievance hearing. MLB decided it had been important to have the info, regardless of whether they ever are presented in just about any disciplinary actions. MLB is not certain whether more files will be presented. Miami New Times noted in January that it received proposed documents describing drug expenditures by Rodriguez, 2012 All-Star recreation MVP Melky Cabrera, 2005 AL Cy Young Award winner Bartolo Colon and 2011 AL championship line MVP Nelson Cruz. Different soccer players the newspaper said appeared in the files include Gio Gonzalez and Yasmani Grandal. Later, Yahoo Sports described that 2011 NL MVP Ryan Braun was described in the documents. A few participants and their spokesmen have denied any improprieties. MLB has sued Biogenesis and its workers in Miami-Dade Circuit Court, leading to the possibility it might make an effort to acquire company files in the civil suit. A request was turned down by new Times by MLB for material the paper acquired. Etc AP Sports Writer Tim Reynolds in Miami added for this statement.
